The 7th grade class had some fun learning the counting numbers from 1-20 in the Filipino Language. They also play math games online about integers and solving simple equations. The games developed speed and accuracy in math problems. As a reward, they received Filipino food (pansit and steamed cheesy rice cake).

💛🖤 Classroom Spotlight 🖤💛
In Mr. Eich's 7th grade class, students conducted their own "Ceremony of 12" project, which is based on Lois Lowry's book The Giver. Just like children were assigned lifelong jobs in The Giver, HMB students were randomly assigned their own jobs, albeit they were a lot sillier than those found in the book. These silly jobs included Water Slide Tester, Whale Snot Collector, Worm Collector, Professional Sleeper, and Happiness Advocate, among many others. Students were then asked to create a "Help Wanted" poster advertising their assigned job, which can be seen in the photo. Following the poster, students wrote reflections on the two jobs they were assigned, including whether or not they would appeal to the "committee" for a different job, and questions that asked them to compare their thoughts/emotions during the ceremony to Jonas's, the protagonist of The Giver.
Mr. Eich's American Literature class (11th/12th graders) completed Arthur Miller's The Crucible, which addressed the Salem Witch Trials while drawing connections to what Miller was experiencing during The Red Scare. In the photo, you can see some students collaborating on the final project for the play, which is a mock trial through which prosecutors and their witnesses (characters from the play) are tasked with charging Abigail Williams, the play's leading antagonist, for her crimes based on modern laws. They opted to charge Abigail with conspiracy to commit murder and perjury. The defense and their witnesses will look to defend Abigail by proving she had no intention of having anyone killed, nor did she lie in court. The witnesses, who have a more limited role during the building of the case and the trial itself, will also act as jurors and will write a reflection paper that will include who they objectively believe won the trial.

October 20th-24th

Fire Prevention Week was October 6th - 10th, and the Kindergarten Class learned throughout the week about fire safety and the tools firefighters use to fight fires. On Friday, October 10th, Chief Derrick, along with fellow firefighters, came and picked up the Kindergartners with the fire truck and took them to the fire hall. They were able to see the fire trucks, the tools, and the uniform that the firefighters wear to fight fires.

The 5th Grade has been learning about worms and whether they really do eat dirt. We also investigated why they like cold and damp places. They had to observe their worms and document their behavior.

Third grade has been "digging up facts "about dinosaurs. Classifying fossils as meat eaters or plant eaters. Measuring and understanding dinosaur steps versus human steps. They got to take a hands-on field trip with North Dakota paleontologist Jeff and saw many fossils and artifacts, including the dinosaur "Dakota ". They also enjoyed creating their own dinosaur silhouette painting.
