We’re excited to announce that Monica Kramer McConkey, Licensed Professional Counselor, is coming back to Emmons County for the Youth Empowerment & Wellness Summit at our local schools on September 27 and 28!
She'll once again visit with middle school and high school students at Linton, Strasburg and HMB schools. In addition, we'll hold a parent/community session on the evening of September 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Strasburg Public School. If a parent or community member is unable to attend in-person, they can contact their respective school to join via Zoom.
Anxiety and worry among our children and youth is increasing according to many research studies. We as parents and community members see this every day in the functioning of our kids. The goal of this presentation is to better understand what can cause anxiety and worry, what happens "inside" a child/youth when they are experiencing anxiety, and what we can do to help both prevent and intervene. During the parent/community session, McConkey will discuss how to help our anxious kids through understanding and intervention.
When feelings of nervousness or worry keep you from living your best life, it can be frustrating and overwhelming. Everyone experiences anxiety on some level, but sometimes it can feel like a crushing weight. This presentation will help us understand what happens to us when we experience worry and anxiety as well as some tips to help us calm and feel better. During the student sessions, McConkey will teach students how to manage stress to feel better.
Monica Kramer McConkey, LPC has 25 years of experience in the behavioral health field as a counselor, program supervisor and administrator. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida and her Master’s degree in Counseling from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Minnesota.
The first twelve years of Monica’s career were dedicated to counseling at risk children and adolescents in rural areas. As a program supervisor and administrator for the next thirteen years, she helped create, implement, and oversee programs to meet the behavioral health needs of youth such as Mobile Mental Health Crisis Services, School Based Mental Health programs, and School Based Interventionist programs.
Ms. McConkey’s focus throughout her career has been to increase access to, and remove the stigma often attached to mental health services. She is the owner of Eyes on the Horizon Consulting, LLC which focuses on mental health issues in rural areas with a focus on stress in agriculture.

Some first week of school fun in the science room. The science classes enjoyed a STEM Cup Stack Challenge. It was difficult not being able to touch the cups. They controlled the string, tied to a rubber band that moved the cups. Very entertaining and team-building.
Tomorrow is the first day of school for the 2023-2024 school year.
