The 5th graders have been learning about western expansion across America, North Dakota's civilization, and the importance of coal to our economy and the electricity it provides. Recently, HMB students traveled to Falkirk Mine for a field trip filled with big machines, mine landscapes, and the importance of the electricity North Dakota provides throughout the United States. The highlight for the students was when “Tour Guide Tim" took them down to a coal pit area and let them pick up and bring home their own bag of coal. A special thank you to Retha Mattern-Lignite Energy Council, Andy Buntrock, BASIN Electric, and Cindy Schlosser for providing all the lunches and snacks on the bus throughout the day. Andy and Rita also gave the kids talks during the transportation on the bus ride and took time for many questions and answers throughout the day.

First grade traveled to the Braddock threshing grounds on September 9th to learn about how life and school were back in the day.
They ‘walked’ to school, took part in the printing press, toured the other buildings, checked out the old tractors, listened to a railroad safety presentation, rode on the people mover, made their own butter, and got to take home a potato that was grown on the grounds.
It was a busy day of hands-on learning!

Elementary Football vs. Napoleon @ Linton - Postponed to Monday, Sept. 21
JH & JV Football vs. Central McLean - Moved to Underwood. Game times will be 5:00 & 6:00. HMB football players will be picked up at 2:15.

Today we did a school-wide project based on the book "One Word for Kids". Elementary and High School students worked together to pick a word to be their theme for the year. They will be displayed in the hallway to serve as a reminder for the students. The students also worked together to make necklaces with their word on them.
